Arrive Bangkok late at night
Day 2 Sunday, April 1 (Easter) Tokyo to Bangkok flight
What an auspicious start to our exotic vacation! We arrived at the Bangkok Airport at 9:30 pm, but didn't get to our downtown hotel until 11:15 pm. After about 32 hours of travel since our morning showers back home, we couldn't wait to take showers before going to bed. Poor Janet slipped in the shower due to a small, unexpected step out, and severely banged her head. It bruised up badly, and continued to drain down to the eye, and below, over the next five days. I was just hoping she wouldn't tell people I'd walloped her.
We were really wiped out when we finally got to our hotel based on the time differences and our bodies' time zone. The flight from Tokyo had lasted 6:40, after the 13-hour flight from Chicago. Thailand is an 11-hour time difference from Ohio, so 11:15 pm at the Bangkok hotel when we arrived was 12:15 pm back home. In that sense, we should not have been sleepy. However, we had forced ourselves not to sleep too much on our flights, during our bodies' nighttime, so that we'd be tired enough to sleep through our first night in Thailand and be all ready for our first day of touring.
The Gate 1 rep was there to meet us after we picked up our luggage at the airport. Then, we were the only ones in the car for the long drive to the hotel. We were glad for no traffic at that late hour, since during most hours, the drive would have been extremely crowded (we learned). One striking thing we noticed on the drive in was the extra-long bright billboards; they were about three or four times wider than the standard ones we'd always seen.
This is the view out our room window, although I didn't even realize we were on the river until the next morning, when this shot was taken. Our room was nice, except there was no bathroom counter space to set things. And, there were the small steps up or down all over, that were potential trip hazards and led to Janet's fall in the shower.
Anyway, we finally went to bed about midnight, and slept well enough. So, Days 1 and 2 of our 10-day tour were just to get there, and we were looking forward to our real tour beginning in the morning. At least we MADE IT there, as opposed to what happened in Morocco!
